001 – Wisdom Wednesdays – Two Bricks

English: Bricks in a wall.

Join me every week for a new edition of Wisdom Wednesdays. I take a quote, a lecture or something that has popped up in my life and share the wisdom I gained, with you!

About a month or so ago I had found a wonderful lecture by a monk named Ajahn Brahm who is an Abbot of Bodhinyana Monastery, in Serpentine, Western Australia. His talks are wonderful and wise and his charm laced with humor in all of his lectures have won the minds of thousands of viewers. To view his lectures please visit the Buddhist Society of Western Australia’s YouTube.

I’m not sure of the title of the lecture (and if anyone does, please let me know!) but he spoke about how he was building a brick building and couldn’t help but notice these two bricks that were out of place. For days he was squabbling in his mind over these two damn bricks. He stated that he wished to “Tear the whole thing down and build it back up again” Of course, this was something that just could not be done. After a few days a visitor came to the building and proclaimed how beautiful it looked. Ajahn looked at the person and asked if they saw the two bricks that were out of place. The onlooker simply stated “No, but I saw the hundreds of other beautiful bricks”

Isn’t that usually how it goes with us? We tend to look at those two proverbial ‘bricks’ in our lives that we just wish we could tear down and do all over? Days, months and even years pass and we still pick at these two friggin’ bricks. We zoom in on those flaws and see them as being this horrid and ugly part of our lives, our homes, our bodies, our relationships. Everything!

What we can learn from this is to take a step back and look at all of the hundreds of other things that we have done. Those beautiful bricks that we have laid with such precision and such care. Those bricks that we should be proud of and focus on. If this is a human condition, why do we do this? Why do we just pick out the ugly?

It’s actually simple, we want to constantly improve. This is not a bad thing but, we need to learn to accept and understand when the two bricks we are looking at simply cannot be taken apart. We can accept our flaws, notice all of the beautiful things about ourselves and move on to create new buildings with new bricks.

The Ripple Effect of ‘Green’ Living

Earth Day Beach Day w/ UncleWeed

By doing one small thing per day and by showing others that you care about the earth it can certainly create a ripple effect. We need to show the earth that we care and that we want to have a more harmonious life with, not only one another, but with OURSELVES! We are all in this together. Let’s start to show ourselves some respect by treating our living space, our bodies and our close relationships with love and respect!

I’ll Do It Tomorrow…Or The Next Day…

I’m sure most of us have been there at the dreaded place called “Procrastination” Maybe some have been there much more often than they would like to admit but I will say that I am one of those people. Putting things off to pursue mind numbing activities like surfing the web, looking at the latest Youtube crazes or constantly checking your Facebook and e-mail…Sound familiar?

There’s good news though! We can all learn a few tips and tricks in order to flush out that procrastination and finally get that essay done or housework we’ve been meaning to do for ages. I can say from personal experience from being able to walk into a nice neat room and knowing that I don’t have to write that 10 page paper at the last minute is surprisingly refreshing.

1. Prioritize
A helpful tip in preventing procrastination is to write out what tasks need to be done and write which ones are most important to those that are least important. For example, an essay that is due two days from now is more important than cleaning your room. You do not need a clean room to write! If you would like a neater space, go to your local coffee shop or library and if you absolutely must stay at home, find a neater room in your house or apartment.

2. List, list, list!
One of the things I have noticed is that by writing a list of the things you need to do is such a huge help in the quest to get things done. By setting up a list for doing things at specific times will also help a bunch too. For instance, say you need to write an essay, clean your room, make some phonecalls and finish up some work related tasks you can create something similar to this…

My Day – April 25th 2011
8:00 AM – 8:30 AM – Waking up, breakfast
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM – Shower
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM – Write outline for essay
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Tidy room

Obviously you can add in any appointments or classes you must attend and leave enough time so that you can get there, spend enough time there and the trip home. This list will give you a general outline of your day. If you happen to run a few minutes over into the next task that’s fine and if you happen to end a bit early that is fine as well. If you happen to be stuck on one task either stop and start the next task or continue and adjust the schedule accordingly.Of course things in life happen so that this may not work out 100% as you have planned, but at least you have a plan. Always make some time set aside just for yourself!

3. Split up tasks
As you can see from the list above I had put from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM – Write outline for essay. By splitting the tasks up you can get more done by not getting stuck on one thing for too long. If the tasks are boring or they require a lot of mental energy it’s best to do chunks of them at different times. So later on in the day you may want to put 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM – Write intro paragraph. Make sure for things like this you allot yourself a few days to finish the task. You can set up your schedules for the week on Sunday and edit whatever pops up accordingly.

4. Set reminders
Have reminders sent to your phone or e-mail stating the important things you have to do throughout the day or week. It’s best to have them sent enough time before the actual task is due. If it’s something like cleaning up set up a date you would like to have it clean by and stick to it! Treat it as if you would treat papers that are due for school or tasks that are due for work. Something like this is especially important for school papers or projects because you want to leave enough time to finish it and revise it if needed.

5. Have friends or family help
It’s always good to talk to your friends or family about some of the issues you may be having with keeping on task. My guess is that your friends will be more than happy to help you stay on task and may even be able to help you finish the task earlier. Having people congratulate you on finishing your task is a huge reward too and will boost your confidence to be able to continue finishing tasks.

6. Shut off the electronics!
If you know for a fact that your cellphone, laptop, iPad or whatever other device you have is going to distract you, TURN IT OFF! It’s really as simple as that. You can even have one of your friends hold on to it for you while you finish your work. If you are writing an essay on the computer and need the internet you must practice some self-discipline. Only go to websites that are needed for your project or print it out and then shut off the internet connection. After you’ve finished you can reward yourself by going on the computer or doing whatever it is that you would rather be doing. Always use that time to tell yourself “Hey, I finished what I needed to get done. Isn’t it awesome that I get to do what I want to do now?”

Procrastination doesn’t always have to be scary. Planning is key! You must, must, must plan your day out and stick to it as best as you possibly can. By ignoring a task or telling yourself you will “Do it later” it allows for the task to slip out of your mind. Having lists and a plan will put the things you need to do right in front of you so that you won’t forget and you will know what needs to be done!

2012

Well we’re all anticipating the arrival of the year 2012 and what it may bring for humanity. Many of us have our own predictions such as disasters, social change or some other phenomena. Some believe that nothing will happen at all and that the world will just continue to experience what it has been experiencing for years. The truth in the matter lies within the fact that whatever we see as reality will be reality. Therefore, a horrible hurricane to those who predict 2012 will be that of a horrible nature-made disaster will begin to label that hurricane as the prophecy of 2012. Those that follow the stock market and see a crash (or rise) in it and think that a huge economic system flux will be what happens in 2012, will see it as such. There is the huge possibility that those that have these elaborate beliefs about what happens in 2012 WILL actually happen in 2012, to them. If you follow what I’m saying then that’s great, and I don’t mean to be rude or put skepticism into anything. In fact, anything is possible. There are a million different things to happen in 2012.

My personal thoughts will lie within those who believe that 2012 will be a time of great spiritual and loving growth. Now some may think that sounds insane and to some these people who are channeling other beings, practicing these forms of astral projection and such are crazy. They on the other hand might think others are crazy for preparing for the absolute apocalypse. The truth is, everyone is crazy. Everyone has their own beliefs and to others they may seem crazy. I personally am beginning to meditate and such and beginning to learn how to relax and connect with myself. What people might not understand is that they do NOT have to sit there like traditional monks or try to astrally project if they do not feel that they should. Do whatever it is that makes you feel connected, that awakens your OWN spirit. Exercise, draw, get out in nature, hang out with your pets, hang out with your loved ones and just be. Don’t worry so much about what happens tomorrow because as humans, we are tough and ready for anything. Know that you are not alone in anything and that there is at LEAST one person feeling the same feelings you are and going through the same things as you (The internet shows us this) We are all together in this. Whatever happens to humanity happens to all of us.

What I enjoy most about the spiritual turnaround that’s predicted in 2012 by these Lightworkers is the fact that they all predict love and growth. Overall, whatever happens, I would like to stick by the belief that the world will change for the better and therefore I will see it as better. Every day that I begin my journey into such thoughts the world gets happier and brighter no matter how dim the situation. No matter how many obstacles I may face throughout the days and weeks to come I will always come back to the one thought that we all are one. That we are part of something much larger than ourselves and that’s such a beautiful thing. Having this love and light to believe in is just a great way to help prepare ourselves mentally for ANY obstacle that comes into play…Whether it be stock market crashes, natural disasters or huge social change. The fact of the matter is, the more grounded we are, the more we understand our unity in all of this, the more we get the fact that things happen we can stay happy through any obstacle.

The most important work we must focus on as a human race is developing our sense of self and the fact that we are all connected to each other. It’s funny because I saw a video on Youtube connecting George Bush with people like Madonna, Vlad the Impaler, Barak Obama etc…(It was a video about the Illuminati) The ONLY thing that I got out of that video was the PROOF that we are all one. If they in fact did all of this DNA testing and tracing back all those years, we should understand that we are ONE. For some, that provokes fear and intimidation and starts making us analyze things (Which, I have begun to learn to overcome over the past few years) We know where we came from, just know that.

Things just are. That is it. There’s no need to look too deep because the deeper we look, the further we get from the surface and the real knowledge of what’s going on. So, what do I suggest for those of you who are still trying to predict what happens or are still afraid of the future of this planet? The only thing I must say is live in the NOW, for that is all we have. And that is the truth.

Blog #1

Here’s my first official blog post here on WordPress. Coming from Blogger is a HUGE change and a welcome one at that. I must say I honestly enjoy every aspect of this website so far and really feel it’s a great asset for those of you out there who are looking for a dynamic blogging website, WordPress is for you.

Anyhow, the daily goings on really weren’t too exciting. There was waking up, taking a shower, eating…you know, the basics. I’ve been contemplating placing all of my writing from school somewhere so I finally got the motivation to do it. Thanks to my lovely boyfriend, he’s inspired much creativity in me the past month.

Not to get all mushy with you guys but I must be honest, I really have found someone I mesh with so well. We balance out each other and we are both creative in our own ways. It’s so refreshing to be with someone who has a creative mind. Ladies (Well, and gentlemen too) If you’re currently unhappy in your current relationship let me advise you to GET OUT! I know that this is hard as I was stuck in an endless cycle of bad relationships (One lasting 5 years) It’s not worth it to sacrifice yourself or not feel yourself around your significant others. Get out there, make a change, see the world. I guarantee that you will thank me down the road! (Now if only my¬† 21, almost 22, year old self could go back in time and kick the crap out of my 17 year old self…Well, then I may have never met my guy now)

It’s difficult for me to stop worrying and being anxious about the future. It seems like everything I do has to have a “What if” or a “Why” or “What’s going to happen?” attached to it. I tell people all of the time to be in the moment and to not worry but to be honest with you it’s easier said than done for me. I seem to be in an endless cycle of worry. I try to embrace the moment but at times, I slip off and get too lost in the darkness of anxiety. I guess my main goal in helping people is to NOT feel the way that I do because I know that it sucks! It’s not meant to be a hypocritical thing but I really just want people to be happy. I’ve felt the pain, worry, hurt, anxiety, fear and all those negative feelings and would never want to wish them upon anyone else. I guess it’s due time to stop talking and start listening to myself.

I love the Buddhist way of thinking and agree wholeheartedly with the teachings. It’s time to practice. I’ve got the necessary tools. I’ve gained the knowledge and now it’s time to put them into play.

Love yourself, do what you set out to do and never give up on anything.
